Most of the basset hounds that come to BassetCARE,
Inc. are strays whose owners cannot be found,
bassets that have been turned in to shelters or
bassets that have been relinquished by their owners
who either no longer want them or who cannot keep
them, for a variety of reasons. Changes in the
economy and in lifestyles are among the multitude of
reasons many bassets end up in rescue.

Dear Sadie,

Hey girl!  I miss you!  My new friends and I want to know
where is your Christmas carol for 2011? We are ready to
sing it for my new Mom, if I can get a Labradoodle and a
Golden to sing.  Gotta run!  Love ya!

Signed, Kharma and my new friends Annie and Homer

Dear Kharma:
Well bless your heart, I am so very glad you found a home
to call your own and that it is not mine.  We have been busy
around here on the farm and I had a spell with my eye, had
to go to a special vet but I did get canned venison for a
snack which was delicious.  Then I had a cyst rupture
which was more disgusting that all these poop eating
dogs around here put together but I got chicken during
recovery and girl, you know it’s not all that bad when you
get you some chicken.  Anyway, I am glad you wrote to
spur me on to writing the Christmas carol for this year.  I
don’t know if you will have much luck getting your new
friends to sing along with you but you howl away and have
yourself a Merry Christmas!

Sung to the tune of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”

God rest ye merry puppies
Let nothing you dismay
Remember to be thankful
For all you have today
Rescued in time from loneliness
When we had gone astray

O tidings of turkey and toys
Turkey and toys
O tidings of turkey and toys

In Portsmouth, in Oxford
We once were lost and cold
And then some kind people
Found us and took hold
To save us all from the dark of night
With a home as good as gold

O tidings of turkey and toys
Turkey and toys
O tidings of turkey and toys

Somewhere tonight there is a dog
Who’s hungry and afraid
Her stomach is empty
His feet are raw and flayed
They need a home, a meal, a hug
A quiet warm place to lay

O tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

God bless the hands that bring the love
To lost and lonely hounds
For every wayward Basset
May loving homes be found
That turkey and chicken become a welcome treat
And all are safe and sound

O tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

That God send you a happy new year
Happy New Year
And God send you a happy new year.
Petey
